Key Takeaways
We continued discussions about Layoffs and Seniority.
We provided a counter on Bargaining Unit Work.
We met with the administration on June 12, 2026. Despite the fact that we were waiting for counters on ten different proposals, the management’s team came to the table prepared to discuss only two: Seniority and Layoffs. We did make some progress toward an agreement on the timing of events after a layoff occurs, but some issues remain. We are concerned about:
How long our seniority (years of service) will be retained;
How long we will be eligible for recall; and
How long we will be eligible for priority consideration for open positions.
Additionally, we are concerned about HOW layoff decisions are made. The university wants to use factors that may be subjective – like performance evaluations – as a major component in layoff decisions. However, many of you have been reaching out to us to tell us that your annual performance evaluations have included inaccurate assessments. Therefore, we had to reiterate our position that layoff decisions should be made using a combination of factors that includes objective elements like qualifications, experience, and seniority.
We also presented a counter on Bargaining Unit Work. Through this proposal, we are attempting to limit the loss of bargaining unit staff jobs due to subcontracting. We hope to have more to tell you about this soon.
In solidarity,
