Who are we?

We are the staff workers of the University of Pittsburgh’s five campuses. We are the advisors, researchers, scientists, library and technology specialists, accountants, educators, designers, counselors, and administrative assistants who make the University work! We support students and faculty. We write grants, secure funding, and manage complex financial and record-keeping systems. We make sure computers work and networks stay online. We plan events and coordinate scheduling. We craft and refine communications, run the University stores, and welcome countless visitors daily. We advocate for our students, programs, and communities, and play an integral role in campus life. In short, we make Pitt work.

Why are we organizing a union?

We are forming a union because every worker at Pitt deserves a seat at the table where decisions are made, and an increase in pay and benefits.

We believe in the outstanding mission of Pitt and are committed to building a university system that staff, faculty, students, and community stakeholders can be proud of. Forming our union will help the University to attract, retain, and motivate the best talent. As one of the region’s largest employers, we can also help set the standard and raise the working conditions of everyone in our community.

We are stronger together.

How do I get involved?

Just as we are Pitt’s most valuable resource, our union’s most important asset is us, the staff. We need your help to spread the word and to talk to every member of Pitt staff about our organizing effort. There is great strength in numbers: the larger our Union, the more powerful we are.

What can we achieve as a union?

Dignity and Respect for Our Work:
We do valuable work for a top-ranked research university, and want our compensation to reflect the dedication and expertise that we bring to the institution.

Improved Pay and Secure Benefits:
With a union contract, the administration would have to negotiate with us before making changes to the benefits that keep us healthy, give us access to education, and allow our families to thrive.

A Say in Decisions that Impact Us:
As a Union, we will make decisions democratically to address the issues that matter to us. We are the union! We will negotiate with the administration as equals in order to advocate for our interests and create a system that works better for everyone.

Making Pitt a Better Place to Work for All:
We love working at Pitt! We respect the institution, and we know that together, we can make things better. We will work with the administration to create a just culture of mutual respect that affirms the values of the entire Pitt community. This will allow us to do our best work to support Pitt’s mission, while also empowering us to address issues that affect our working lives.
